NSA against Ajay Rai: Congress set to move High Court

Ajay Rai, MLA from Pindra Assembly constituency, is currently lodged at Fatehgarh Central jail

After failing to get time to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the UP Congress is now preparing to file an appeal in the High Court protesting the confirmation of invoking of National Security Act (NSA) against party MLA from Varanasi Ajay Rai. The state government gave its confirmation to invoke NSA against Rai last week on the recommendation of the advisory board.

“State government has worked with political vendetta against our MLA. We would now make an appeal in the High Court against the decision. The advisory board makes recommendation on the basis of the report of the district collector, who, in this case, has clearly functioned at the behest of the chief minister,” claimed AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry, who had met Governor Ram Naik also earlier requesting intervention into the matter.

He further said, “It is now our priority to get our MLA out because he has been made a political victim. Even in Gujarat, there are so many political protests but no one invokes NSA against the political leaders”.

Meanwhile, Congress MLAs, who had sought time from Chief Minister Akhilsh Yadav to present their case in favour of Ajay Rai, have still not got any response. “It has been over 15 days but there has been no response. Since state government has given its confirmation (to invoke NSA against Rai) now, we will seek advice from the party high-command about our future course of action, “ said Congress Legislative Party leader Pradeep Mathur.

Ajay Rai, MLA from Pindra Assembly constituency, is currently lodged at Fatehgarh Central jail. He was arrested in connection with the violence that erupted during a protest march in Varanasi on October 5 against lathicharge on seers and their followers.

“There were BJP MLAs also supporting the protest but such an action has been taken only against Rai, who was not even involved in the violence,” said Mistry, adding that while legal opinion is being taken, a meeting would also take place in Delhi on Tuesday to decide further steps.
