Five days after suspending the students union president Shahzad Alam from the rolls of the university, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has frozen the AMU students union fund that is used by the union to organise various events on the campus. The union has termed the administration’s move an attempt to make it defunct.

The university has frozen the fund, allegedly because the union did not submit the documents showing expenditure of Rs 15.30 lakh that the union had drawn for organising various activities like the athletics meet, mushaira and an all-India debate in the last three months. The union fund is raised by collecting Rs 60 from every student at the time of admission. In the current academic year, the university had collected Rs 27 lakh.

University spokesperson Rahat Abrar said that the students union had drawn Rs 15.30 lakh in advance for organising different events, with the signature of Alam. “As per the university rules, the union must submit the proof of utilisation of the fund after the event. But this has not been done,” Abrar said. The spokesperson said that fund had been frozen and now the union could not draw any money. “Funds can’t be used also because there is no students union president at present due to suspension of Alam. The vice-chancellor has not given the charge of president to any other office-bearer so far,” Abrar said.

Alam denied the charges of the university. “Documents about utilisation of most of the funds had been submitted in the finance section. Documents of only a very small amount are pending for submission,” he added.

The freezing of the students union fund is likely to affect the seminar that the students union has announced to organise on April 15 for a discussion on the demand for minority status for AMU. The university had suspended Alam last Saturday for “creating nuisance” during a function which was attended by the Union Minister of State for HRD Jitin Prasada. The university campus was declared out of bounds for him.

Alam claimed he had only raised the issue of granting minority status to the institution, which irked Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah. Alam today said that the vice-chancellor was trying to make students union inactive by freezing the fund after suspending him.
