To curb the increasing cases of fires in Noida’s slum clusters, the fire department is planning to provide ‘fire aid kits’ to all slum clusters in the area.

In the past four months, there have been at least eight fires in the slum clusters — resulting in seven deaths, mostly of children.

On Friday,a fire triggered by a LPG cylinder bursting in Nawada village claimed the lives of two persons — a nine-year-old girl and a 65-year-old physically challenged woman. Twenty-five shanties were destroyed in the blaze.

“The fire aid kit will include several buckets of sand kept at a spot in the cluster. At every handpump, which each of these clusters have,a hose will be provided. The hose will save time of carrying buckets of water to the origin of fire,” an official said.

Officials said fire spreads rapidly in the slums, due to the material used to construct the shanties. According to the department,it is essential to stop the fire as soon as it starts.

“Once the fire hits one of the thatched walls or roofs of the house, chances are that it will cause havoc,” an official said. The department is also looking at an “alarm system”,which will alert people in case of a fire.
