The National Green Tribunal Tuesday directed the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) and the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to conduct a joint inspection of storm water drains in Kaushambi after a petition alleged a lack of connectivity and dumping of waste water into drains.
The Principal Bench of NGT told the two authorities to conduct a joint inspection and chart out a map showing all sewers that are connected to storm water drains. During the hearing, the commissioner of the GNN assured the bench that the drains within the Kaushambi township would be cleaned before July 1, the next date of hearing.
The directions came on an application filed by Kaushambi Apartments Resident Welfare Association, which claimed that land sold by GDA to Raj Residency, Supertech, Yashoda Hospital and others was the reason for sewage finding its way into the storm water drains. “As the sewer lines were never laid, all the water from an untreated sewer is being dumped into the drain in violation of environmental laws and NGT orders,” read the application. The plea further alleged that the GDA did not assess the provisions for these basic facilities before granting clearances for occupation.
