As many as 33 persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Hindu Yuva Vahini leader Ram Babu Gupta in Tanda area of Ambedkar Nagar district, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan said that the situation was very tense in Tanda area and hence curfew had been imposed in the town.
The government gave the information while responding to an adjournment notice, given by BJP members, led by Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, who said that the Ambedkar Nagar district administration could had averted the incident if it had taken action in September when a youth had barged into the house of a girl and molested her.
Agarwal said that family members of the girl had thrashed the youth and the situation was tense since then. Agarwal alleged that the police did not accept the complaint of the girls family and, instead, lodged an FIR against them on the complaint of the offending youth.
Ram Babu Gupta of Hindu Yuva Vahini was leading the issue to mount pressure on the police to lodge an FIR against the accused youth. From September to March 3,several cases were registered against Ram Babu and later he was killed on March 3, Agarwal said.
He also said that when the funeral procession of Gupta passed by a religious place the next day, unidentified people pelted stones. Policemen were also injured in stone pelting, he said. Agarwal asked the government to inform about the action it had taken against the assailants who killed Gupta and against those who pelted stones.
In his reply,Khan said that the incident was an attempt to malign the image of the state government. FIR was lodged in the murder case against unidentified persons, but the houses of Muslims were set on fire.
Meanwhile,Ambedkarnagar District Magistrate Pankaj Yadav, who is camping in Tanda along with the Superintendent of Police, said the curfew will continue till Wednesday noon when they are planning to give a break of four hours between 12 to 4 pm.
