After Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday reportedly agreed to form a committee to probe communal riots during the Akhilesh Yadav regime,Bareilly cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan accepted the government’s offer to become vice-chairman of the state handloom corporation that has minister-of-state status.

In more leeway to Raza, the ruling party is also likely to change its candidate,Ayesha Islam, from Bareilly. Ayesha is the wife of Shahzil Islam, the lone MLA of Raza’s political outfit Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC),who switched to the SP on Thursday.

In a joint press conference with PWD,Irrigation and Co-operative Minister Shivpal Yadav,Raza announced that the IMC will not contest the Lok Sabha election and support SP candidates.

“Our main demand to form a probe committee for communal riots has been accepted. It will consist of a retired judge and police officers. Both Hindu and Muslims will be represented equally,” Raza stated.

Shivpal added,“My request is that Tauqeer Raza himself accept the responsibility of heading the probe committee. It will be constituted very soon.”

Raza also said that Mulayam has also agreed to include a Urdu paper in PCS(J) paper and withdraw all fake cases against innocents.

“Cases against those who have been falsely implicated should be withdrawn irrespective of religion,” said Raza.

Raza had also asked for changing the SP Lok Sabha candidate from Bareilly Ayesha Islam. “I told Mulayam that if Ayesha Islam is given the ticket, the election will be polarised on communal riots. It is better to change such candidates. The SP chief has assured he will reconsider such candidates and they are likely to be changed,” Raza said.

Raza, who was offered the post of vice-chairman of the handloom corporation on May 27,had said he will take charge only after a committee was formed to probe communal riots and fixed June 20 as the deadline for acceptance of his demand.

On Thursday,he said he will part ways with the SP and not accept the post offered unless Mulayam met him.

In a sudden development,Mulayam met Raza at the party office. He is said to have received Raza at the gate. After the meeting,Raza claimed that all his demands had been accepted.
