Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is expected to address a meeting of his party workers at the Town Hall here on Thursday, with an eye on the Assembly elections to be held later this year.

Though SP has never contested elections in this state, party leaders are now contemplating to field candidates from some of the constituencies in south Gujarat with some presence of North Indians from UP and Bihar and good chunk of them are reported to be SP supporters.

The main reason for Mulayam’s plan to contest polls in Gujarat, according to party sources,is his ambition to see his party gets a national status from the Election Commission.

Party leaders say that North Indians form a substantial section of electorates in the industrial belt of Bharuch,Ankleshwar,Vapi and Surat.

Recently they conducted a state level membership drive and the response was good in these areas. The response is also reported to be good in some areas in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Gujarat SP president Surendra Yadav said that he was aware of the situation here and added that efforts were being made to ensure that local people join the party.
