A day after the alleged murder of Indian Justice Party (IJP) candidate from Jaunpur Bahadur Lal Sonekar,Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday held a rally in the area and lashed out at Chief Minister Mayawati, saying the ruling BSP was a “party of mafia”.

Sonekar was found hanging from a tree early Monday morning in Dahrnidharpur area. Yadav, who addressed a rally in Badlapur area, urged people to rout the BSP in the state. “Nobody is safe in this BSP government. Everybody knows who has murdered Soneker. Mafia and murderers have been ruling the roost in this government. It is now time to take on these criminals and mafia,” he said.

Yadav said Mayawati has left even the British empire far behind in dictatorship. “She is stone-hearted and that is why she loves stones,” the former chief minister said in an obvious reference to the Ambedkar Park in Lucknow.

The SP chief said he would increase the unemployment wage from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 if people vote for his party in the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile,Jaunpur remained tense two days after the alleged murder. As an anticipatory measure, the district administration deployed police in sensitive areas, including the residence of the slain IJP candidate in Line Bazar. Additional director general of the CB-CID,Pradhumn Singh, and his team on Tuesday took over the inquiry into the alleged murder.

Singh also met the family members of the victim including Sonekar’s wife Sharda Devi, son Raju and brother Badaru, and recorded their statements. He also summoned all records, including the first complaint the candidate had made to the district magistrate, the inquiry report of the Jaunpur SP VK Dohare against the CO (city) D N Chaudhery, who had allegedly threatened the deceased as well as the postmortem report.

Jaunpur District Magistrate Aparna U,who is also the returning officer of Jaunpur parliamentary seat, has sent a report to the state chief election officer,Anuj Bishnoi, over the incident. “I have mentioned the entire incident, including the details of the postmortem report,” Aparna said.

Jaunpur gets addl observer for polls
The Election Commission has deployed Labour Commissioner S R Meena as an additional observer for Jaunpur district. State Chief Electoral Officer A K Bishnoi said this on Tuesday. “Meena has been sent to Jaunpur to review the death of IJP candidate. He will be stationed in Jaunpur till polling was over in the district,” he added.
