The inauguration of Azam Khan’s Mohammad Ali Jauhar University at Rampur turned into an occasion for Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to lavish praises on Khan.

Mulayam, who inaugurated the university, said: “I have no words to praise Khan. Our nature is quite similar. Khan has completed what he decided. I knew that this university will be a reality when I had laid the foundation stone in 2006. I have full faith in Khan.”

He also asked Khan to go ahead with his plan of setting up a medical college and assured that there will be no dearth of funds. “People will remember Khan for several generations. He has done such a great work by setting up a grand university,” the SP chief said.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, too, praised Khan and assured that there will be no scarcity of funds. “I had asked him about the allocation before budget but he did not say anything. We have given Rs 10 crore and it will be increased in next budget. I know him,he will not say anything on his own,” said Akhilesh.

Khan,in his address, became emotional and was in tears twice. Known for his oratory skills,Khan lashed out at his political adversary, the Nawab family of Rampur for keeping Rampur backward, while lauding Mulayam and Akhilesh. “When the CM asked me what should he announce at the function,I had only said that let there be a bond of faith. You become mine and I turn yours, this is all I want,” said Khan.

Mulayam, meanwhile, used the occasion for a veiled attack at then Governor T V Rajeshwar. “I had advised ‘him’ to sign the file related to the Jauhar University. But it did not happen,it was forwarded,” said Mulayam in reference to the Raj Bhawan’s objection to the university in 2004.

Rajeshwar had objected to the clause of Khan becoming life-long Pro-Chancellor of the institution. The bill was withdrawn and again passed with Jauhar University as a private varsity in 2005 and Khan as Chancellor and, this time the Raj Bhawan had no objection.

Akhilesh stated that some elements had tried to hinder the establishment of Jauhar University but it became a reality due to the perseverance and hard work of Khan.

Khan narrated the hardships he had to face during the process of setting up the university. He recounted how the building material which he had bought for the university was stolen, fake cases lodged against him,and walls of the university were damaged. Khan also stated that he had requested the Chief Minister to transfer the Samajwadi Party office building of Rampur district, which is situated on Topkhana Road,to Jauhar Trust. “Presently,it is in my name and I don’t want my offspring to stake claim on it,” he said. It is reported that Khan wants to convert the premises into a girls hostel.

As many as 43 ministers, including Shivpal Yadav,Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya,Mehboob Ali were present at the inauguration function.
