Locals allegedly attacked a police team, exchanged fire and freed a gangster from their custody in a village in Mirzapur on Thursday. Eight people, including some policemen, sustained injuries in the clash, police said. A case has been registered into the matter, but no arrest has been made so far.
Station Officer, Pandri police station, Yogesh Yadav said a team had gone to arrest gangster Hasnu for allegedly issuing life threats to a man. Hasnu, who has six criminal cases including attempt to murder, Arms Act pending against him, was externed from the district for six months by district magistrate on July 24, he added.
On Thursday, the SO said, they were tipped-off about Hasnu staying at his house at Bharpura village. The police team led by the SO reached there in the noon and caught Hasnu from his house. As they were about to leave, villagers gathered asking them to release Hasnu, Yadav said.
As the policemen tried to apply force to disperse the gathering, the people stated pelting stones. As policemen retaliated by firing in air and also firing rubber bullets, Hasnu fled, SO added. The SO claimed that the locals even fired at policemen.
Additional police force rushed to the village later and dispersed the mob applying lathicharge, he said.
Yadav also said that he has come to know that a 10-year-old girl had also sustained rubber bullet injury but they have yet to verify it. ENS
