Actor Mithun Chakravarty is set to be the star campaigner for All India Trinamool Congress in Uttar Pradesh, a state which is being tested by the party for the first time in a big way in the Lok Sabha elections. Mithun is expected to start his campaign in western UP, which are going to polls April 10 in the first phase.
With Anna Hazare distancing himself from TMC earlier this month, the party which was otherwise eyeing over 40 seats in UP, has now settled for a total of 25 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats. Of the seats that TMC is contesting, three fall in the region going to polls in the first phase, for which Chakravarty will campaign in the coming week.
“We will finalise date of his (Chakravarty’s) visit soon. He will be here between April 2 and April 8. In the first phase, he will campaign in Delhi and Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar and Kairana,” said Shyam Sundar Sharma, party’s state chief and only MLA from the party in the state assembly.
Among the 25 seats, most of them are VIP constituencies like Congress bastions of Rae Bareli, Amethi and BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi’s Varanasi. From Rae Bareli TMC has fielded a young Hindi news anchor Anju Singh while from Amethi, the party has given ticket to another first timer Chhaya Singh.
Against BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi, TMC has given ticket to Indira Tiwari, former general secretary of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha and granddaughter of former Congress leader Kamalapati Tripathi.
Against BJP chief Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, TMC has given ticket to Muslim businessman Mohammad Sarwar Malik, while against Mulayam Singh Yadav in Azamgarh, the party has given ticket to Madan Mohan Mishra.
