The Congress today received a major setback when the chairman of its minority cell,Manzoor Ahmed, left the party to join the ruling BSP. Ahmed had contested the mayoral elections for Lucknow and had polled over 1 lakh votes.

Ahmed’s defection has come as a shock for the Congress as it was planning to use him as the minority face of the party, mainly for the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency.

The Muslim leader was among the four who had proposed the candidature of Rita Bahuguna Joshi as the Congress candidate for Lucknow. Party insiders said Ahmed had wanted the seat for himself.

Though Ahmed resigned from all his posts before joining the BSP,Congress leaders claimed he was actually sacked for his anti-party activities. “We have removed him from the party because he was indulging into anti-party activities,” said Subodh Srivastava, the chief spokesperson of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

Meanwhile, soon after joining the BSP,Ahmed took to campaigning for the party’s Lucknow candidate,Akhilesh Das.

Mayawati on Tuesday got another shot in the arm when S M A Kazmi,a former advocate general and close aide of Mulayam Singh Yadav, left the Samajwadi Party to join the BSP.
