Allahabad * Cops manage to get hold of him after a two-hour-long drama
A Farmer believed to be mentally unstable allegedly beheaded his wife in Meja area of Allahabad on Friday morning. After nearly two-hour-long drama during which he inflicted injuries on his sister and brother-in-law,the man was taken into police custody.
According to the police,Dhirendra Singh alias Bijli Singh,a resident of Guru Dutt Ka Pura (Samogra) village under Meja police station, attacked his 37-year-old wife Samla Singh with a spade. She was picking utensils in the courtyard of the house when Dhirendra hit her on the neck with a spade. When Samla collapsed,he kept attacking her continuously and beheaded her, said Circle Officer (Meja) Sagir Ahmed.
After killing his wife,Dhirendra simply sat in a corner of the courtyard.
In the meantime,Dhirendras 15-year-old son,Rohit, went to the neighbouring Sikti village and informed his fathers sister Sunita about the incident. When Sunita and her husband Shiv Kumar reached the village and tried to confront the Dhirendra,he attacked them with a knife. Both Sunita and her husband suffered minor injuries. Police were then informed but when they reached the spot Dhirendra had locked himself in the house and climbed on to the roof. He refused to come down and kept waving a knife threatening to kill himself.
Finally, after nearly two hours, the accused relented and we managed to arrest him, said Ahmed.
So far,Dhirendra has not told police any specific reason for killing his wife.
He has not been talking to us. His family members and villagers say that the accused was mentally unstable and had earlier beaten up his family members without any provocation, said Ahmed.
The officer added that, about 10 years ago,Dhirendra was treated for mental illness. He had shown signs of improvement for a few years, said Ahmed. The couple have three children, two sons and a daughter, from the wedlock.
