MURDER convicts, former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani Tripathi, were Friday shifted to Gorakhpur jail from a state-run medical college in the district where they had been “undergoing treatment for nausea, depression and abdominal pain” for past over two-and-a-half years.

Amarmani and his wife were sentenced to life imprisonment after they were convicted of murdering poetess Madhumita Shukla in Lucknow in 2003. After spending some time in jail, the former minister had got admitted to a private ward of Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College on February 27, 2013. Madhumani joined him two weeks later on March 13.

Both were discharged earlier in the day and shifted to the district jail at about 12 noon in a private ambulance.

“The action has been taken on directions of the government, which was sent a report prepared by a nine-member medical board of the hospital a day ago,” said college principal R P Sharma.

The committee, comprising doctors from different departments of the medical college, was formed to inquire about the health conditions of jail inmates who had remained admitted to hospital for long period.

“In its report, the committee stated that both Amarmani and his wife can undergo treatment in jail and do not need to remain admitted to the hospital any further. Both were being treated for spondylitis, depression and some other problems,” Sharma added.

Amarmani and Madhumani were staying in separate private rooms of the hospital.

Sharma said, if needed Amarmani and his wife could visit district hospital and may also visit outpatient department (OPD) of the medical college for any medical problem.

A trial court in Dehradun (Uttarakhand) had held the couple and three others guilty of murdering poetess Madhumita Shukla and slapped life sentence on them in 2007. The trial was shifted from UP to Uttarakhand by the Supreme Court on the request of Madhumita’s family. In July 2012, the Uttarakhand High Court upheld the life imprisonment following which they were serving their sentence at Dehradun Jail.
However, in January 2009, Madhumani got shifted to Gorakhpur jail as she had to attend hearings in other cases. Amarmani, too, was shifted to the same jail in March, 2012. Though there is no case pending against Amarmani in UP at present, he continued to stay in Gorakhpur.

On February 27, 2013, Amarmani was shifted to the BRD Medical College from jail after he complained of “pain in abdomen and lower back and nausea”. On March 13, the same year, Madhumani also shifted to the same hospital after complaining of “depression and suicidal tendency”.

The slain poetess’ sister, Nidhi Shukla, later took up the matter in the court alleging that the couple was not suffering from any ailment.
Amarmani’s son, Amanmani, was in news recently after his wife, Sara, was killed in a road accident in Firozabad district. The case is being probed by CBI after her family members alleged that she was murdered.
