The accused buried the woman's body in the graveyard. (File)The Mau administration and the police on Sunday exhumed the body of a 25-year-old woman after her younger sister alleged that she was murdered in November last year for witnessing a sexual assault.
The police said the exhumation was carried out after obtaining permission from the district court. The body has been sent for postmortem, and the report is awaited.
“Our next course of action will be based on the findings of the postmortem report,” said the station house officer of the police station concerned.
According to the police, a 21-year-old woman came to the police station in February and lodged an FIR against her brother-in-law for allegedly raping her and also killing her elder sister by strangling her. The complainant claimed that the incident occurred when she had gone to her sister’s house for some work in November last year. She said her sister’s husband first sexually assaulted her, and when her sister found out about it, he killed her, fearing that she would tell others about the sexual assault.
The complainant alleged that to hide the crime, the accused buried the body in the graveyard.
The woman claimed she was under threat, so she could not approach the police earlier. The police have registered a case against the survivor’s brother-in-law.
