A man was arrested after locals alleged they found him “raping” a 40-year-old mentally-challenged woman on Saturday night near Daliganj railway crossing in Lucknow. Police however say that the woman is denying any rape attempt. According to police, at around 11.15 pm, the accused Rahul (20) is alleged to have lured her to a police booth where he allegedly raped her. An FIR has been registered at the Hasanganj police station under the section 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC by Husna Aara, a social worker, who claimed to be a witness to the incident.
“I was at the Daliganj crossing with my son when I heard a scream. I looked around for the source of the sound and noticed that the voice was coming from inside the police booth. When I looked inside through a window I saw that the woman was half-naked and the man was trying to rape her,” the complaint filed by Aara said, adding that when she called for help, the accused tried to escape but was caught, and beaten when the police didn’t arrive for nearly 15 minutes. However P K Jha, SHO Sahanganj, said the woman is denying the rape allegation.
“When we asked the woman, she is saying than the man offered her biscuits, but is denying any kind of rape attempt,” Jha said, adding that when woman police officials asked her if she was touched inappropriately, she is denied that too. “There isn’t any wound or mark on her body. We can only be sure after the medical report, which is expected in a day or two, Jha said. He added that the exact whereabouts of the victim is not known yet and all they know is that she is from Bihar and people had been seeing her on the street for months.
