Union sports minister Ajay Maken is hopeful that the BCCI would not oppose the new draft of the National Sports Development Bill as the objections which it had pertaining to certain things in the sports bill “have been removed.”
Maken paid a brief visit to the Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy (UPBA) at Lucknow on Sunday. Talking to mediapersons regarding the anti-doping provisions in the bill,Maken said,“The national body has to adhere to the rules only to the extent the international body of the sport (ICC) follows the WADA rules.” “Things related to the financial and administrative information will only come under RTI. We have also ensured that players are not at a loss. So I hope that the BCCI will not oppose the bill now,” he said.
He said that he has made it clear that if the sports federations felt that any provisions of the bill will lead to an unnecessary government interference in their functioning then such provisions would be looked into and removed. The sports federations have asked to send their feedback. He however said that “RTI and the age and tenure guidelines” will be there.
Responding to a question regarding the ongoing tussle between Hockey India (HI) and the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF),he said that if “we try to sort out things,it is perceived that we are interfering while if we do not make such efforts then the tussle between the IHF and HI increases further.” He gave indications that such tussles should be done away with for the benefit of the sport. He said that if still a solution is not reached “the government will put its views in the Supreme Court.”
Maken also met the Indian junior badminton team’s campers at the Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy (UPBA) who are preparing for the World Junior Championships. He distributed kits to the campers and honoured the meritorious junior players.
