Mainpuri violence- Police framed 21 party members: BJP

BJP leaders claimed that 14 party members, including BJP’s city unit president Rakesh Chandel, have been named in the FIR and sent to jail.

THE BJP on Monday claimed that 21 out of the 31 people accused of arson and violence in Mainpuri following rumours of cow slaughter were its members but have been framed by police.

Last Friday, violence had broken out in Mainpuri’s Karhal town over rumours of cow slaughter. Two Muslim men — Lalla and Shafeeq — were arrested for “promoting enmity between groups” after they were found skinning a dead cow.

The preliminary inquiry had confirmed that Lalla and Shafeeq did not have the license to skin and dispose of the dead animal. Police, however, will remove charges under Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act slapped against the two, as the postmortem report of the dead cow has confirmed it had died from a disease. Their families claimed the attack was pre-planned.

BJP leaders claimed that 14 party members, including BJP’s city unit president Rakesh Chandel, have been named in the FIR and sent to jail.

Police have also accused two SP workers of leading the rioters, beating up the two Muslims, and of arson and violence. While one Avneesh Yadav alias Bittu was arrested Monday, the other, Prashant Yadav — SP leader and brother of nagar panchayat chairman Sanjeev Kumar Yadav — is absconding.

The FIR lodged by Karhal SHO Dilip Singh has alleged that he, along with other policemen, had seen Teetu (Prashant Yadav), Bulli Neta (Rakesh Chandel), Petha (dead cow allegedly belonged to him), one Kallu dealer and Raj Yadav (brought crowd in his tractor-trolley) leading the mob. Avneesh alias Veera, Guddan Sharma, Roshan Sharma, Shanu, Neeraj Chaturvedi, Ankur Chaurasia and 20 others (all named) have been accused of instigating the mob of 250 to 300 people.

The FIR added that the accused carried the cow carcass on a hand-cart and provoked locals. When police tried to stop them, they — with help from the mob — attacked police personnel. They went on to torch police vehicles and an ATM by sprinkling petrol, which they were carrying, the SHO alleged. In the FIR, Singh has also said that Teetu, Bulli Neta, Kallu dealer, Raj Yadav, Petha, Shafeeq and Lalla hatched the conspiracy to cause law and order disturbance and also indulged in rioting and arson.

BJP district vice-president Anurag Pandey said the 21 partymen booked are Guddan, Rakesh Chandel, Kallu, Roshan, Shanu, Neeraj Chaturvedi, Karu, Ankur Chaurasia, Shivam, Pramod, Ashu, Babloo, Raja, Neeraj, Chhotey, Ashok Singh, Himanshu, Mukesh, Gopal Sharma, Petha and Kanhaiya alias Kuldeep.

“Of the 21 named in the FIR, 14 are in jail. Three other party workers who have not been named have also been arrested… While police were targeting locals with a BJP background, SP leader Prashant Yadav was yet to be arrested,” he added.
SP’s Mainpuri district president K S Verma said no party officer-bearer has been named in the FIR. “The BJP has no base in Karhal town and those named in the case are anti-social elements. Prashant Yadav has been wrongly named in the case,” he claimed. The police, meanwhile, on Monday arrested around 130 BJP workers while they were on way to Karhal for staging a protest against police action against partymen. They were released soon after.
