The mahapanchayat that villagers in Hussainpura of Muzaffarnagar district had decided to hold against the Samajwadi Party government, after the murder of three Muslim youths in the village, was cancelled after Mulayam Singh Yadav reportedly promised to meet them on November 11.
The region was threatened by a second outbreak of communal violence after three youths from Hussainpura were killed following a clash with the neighboring village of Mohammadpur-Raisingh. The villagers of Hussainpura had demanded the swift arrest of the accused and Rs 25 lakh as compensation for the kin of the victims.
Shahnawaz, husband of the pradhan at Hussainpura village who is related to the three victims, said Mulayam had agreed to their demands in addition to the promise of meeting them.
Incidentally,Shahnawaz is also the nucleus of a new organisation, the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Manch (BKMM),which has been formed to counter the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU). The BKU has been lending support to the Jat-dominated Mohammadpur-Raisingh village.
Two days after the triple murder,Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait (secretary and president of BKU respectively) had attended a panchayat in the Jat-dominated village and suggested a meeting with Muslims in an attempt to reach a peaceful solution. They had also spoken about the need to protect Jat interests from a government that favoured only one community. But the newly formed BKMM rejected the offer for a meeting.
The BKU is trying to hijack the situation. We want peace too,but we’ll not tolerate any atrocity committed against us, said Gulam Mohammad, national president , BKMM.
