Police Friday arrested two youths for allegedly stalking and harassing school girls on their way home in Bareilly’s Paharpur village.
The district had witnessed a communally charged atmosphere last July after about 100 girls of the village had stopped going to school because of “regular harassment” and eve-teasing from youths of the neighbouring Tanda village.

Thursday saw a repeat when two girls, returning home in a motorcycle with the father of one of them, began to be followed allegedly by two youths on another motorcycle who passed some obscene remarks as well.
As they approached Paharpur village, the father stopped to alert the locals, who caught hold of the youths and beat them up before handing them over to the police, Shergarh Station Officer Upender Singh said.
Police identified the accused youths as Amir Khan (19) and Faiz Khan (20), residents of Sheeshgarh locality.
Police Friday produced them before the court which remanded them into custody.
Both the girls are neighbours and students of Class XII.
Based on the father’s complaint, the police have registered a case on charges of eve-teasing and also invoked sections under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
In July last year, the district had become communally tense when girls from at least five villages stopped going to school as they had to cross a 50-metre stretch of Dhonda stream in a makeshift boat to reach the other side where youths from Tanda village would harass them. It was alleged that the youths would bathe nude in the river, pass lewd remarks, splash water on the girls and also rock their boat.
The villagers had thrashed five youths of Tanda village —a Muslim stronghold — for harassing girls and the police had registered an FIR against them.
Following assurance in the company of police officers, the girls had started going to school. Later, the police protection was withdrawn.
