UP: 22 killed in wall collapse incidents amid heavy rain

The victims lived in huts outside the enclave and were asleep when the incident took place, the police said. The deceased include three men, three women and as many children, an official said. Those injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital and doctors said their condition was stable.

At least 21 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh, including nine persons in the state capital Lucknow, after portions of houses collapsed due to heavy overnight rains in the last 24 hours.

In Lucknow’s Dilkusha area, nine people, including three children, were buried alive while two were injured when an under-construction wall of an Army enclave collapsed late Thursday night.

The victims lived in huts outside the enclave and were asleep when the incident took place, the police said. The deceased include three men, three women and as many children, an official said. Those injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital and doctors said their condition was stable.

After getting information about the incident, a police team reached the spot, pulled out victims from the debris and took them to hospital.

“The wall of the building fell on the victims due to heavy rain. The men worked as daily wage labourers,” Cantonment police station in-charge Shiv Charan Lal said.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who represents the Lucknow Cantonment constituency in the state assembly, visited the site and later enquired about the well-being of the injured persons at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital.

In Unnao district’s Kantha and Chandpur Jhalihai villages, five people, including two children, died in wall collapse incidents. At Kantha village, three siblings — Ankit (20), Ankush (4) and Unnati (6)— died after a wall of their house collapsed due to rain, Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Narendra Singh said.

The villagers said the incident took place between 2am and 3am when the parents of the deceased had come out to assess the damage caused to their house due to the rain. At Chandpur Jhalihai village of the district, a 66-year-old man, identified as Bal Govind, died, the ADM said.

At Kasanda village of the district’s Hasanganj sub-division, Sohan (75) died when his thatched hut collapsed over him due to heavy rain, SDM Devendra Pratap Singh said.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said three people died in Fatehpur (3) and one in Sitapur.

In Prayagraj, two children — Shreya (4) and Amit Kumar (5) — were killed after a wall of their mud house collapsed over them. District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Khatri said the incident occurred in a village under Mamrez police station area on Friday afternoon.

In Raebareli, a three-year-old child was killed in a similar incident on Friday.

“Rajneesh was killed when a house collapsed in Mauryapur area. His two siblings and mother also sustained injuries in the incident and are hospitalised.”

In Jhansi’s in Sipri Bazar area, a two-story building collapsed following heavy rain on Thursday night.

The state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state recorded 32.2 mm average rainfall on Friday which is 428% higher than the long period average (LPA) of 6.1 mm. Barabanki received the highest of 192.7 mm rain among the districts, followed by Lucknow (116.9 mm) and Mau (110 mm).

President Droupadi Murmu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputies Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incidents.

Murmu tweeted, “I am deeply saddened by the news of death of people due to a wall collapse in Lucknow. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
