What’s it about? Hindi Hai Hum is a compelling drama that brings to the forefront the underlying spirit of unity amongst Indian youth. Bubbly Tripathi is a provincial girl, living happily with her family in the small town of Nahaan in Uttaranchal. Doted on by her father Brijeshwar, she has grown up to believe that Nahaan is her world. But Bubbly’s ambitious mother,Kamla, believes otherwise. She wishes to see Bubbly married to an English-speaking groom living in a big house,in a big city. She believes those who ‘Think English and Speak English’ are ahead in life.

Bubbly comes to Mumbai to learn English where she meets people from different walks of life, who are unhappy with their individual lives and their country. They believe that learning English will provide them with the sophistication required to deal with their challenges in life and enable them to build a better life— whether that means marrying a foreigner and settling abroad or getting a job in a multinational company.

Who’s in it? There are three central characters. Ridhi Dogra is the main lead who plays the role of Bubbly. Diya Chopra, who was earlier seen in serials like Left Right Left, plays a rich, stylish girl who has not seen the tougher side of life. Her husband, played by Puneet Panjwani,is a small town boy who has learnt the art of big city living.

What’s hot? The show and the characters are unadulterated and fresh as compared to other shows currently on television. The female lead, playing the role of a tourist guide,is a pleasant change. Going by the popular trend these days on TV,this show too started off with a rural setting and this seems to be working in its favour. Although the importance of English language is known to us,it is for the first time that it is being tackled on a Hindi soap.

Unlike other serials on national integration,it has not tried to bring about a stark contrast between religions and regions, but,in fact, placed India on a global map.

What’s not? The costume designers for these serials need to better their act. Similar prints, designs and hairdos — it has become difficult to distinguish one serial from the other. While at times places it looks borrowed from the erstwhile Mind Your Language and Zabaan Sambhal Ke (specially the classroom scenes),it fails miserably because of the lack of quick-wit.

Should you be watching it? TV addicts may find this to be a welcome change. The rest can continue to watch this show, until it transforms into another domestic drama.
