Kheri rape victim’s kin get Rs 10-lakh government aid

While the victim’s body was found charred, medical test to prove rape had remained inconclusive.

Over a month after a 16-year-old rape victim had set herself ablaze in Lakhimpur Kheri district, the state government, on the recommendation of special committee set up under ‘UP Rani Laxmibai Mahila Samman Kosh’, provided the victim’s family Rs 10 lakh as assistance on Thursday.

However, the committee headed by District Magistrate Kinjal Singh had recommended financial assistance on the basis of the circumstantial evidence. The girl was allegedly raped on February 12 in Bargadiya village when she had reportedly gone to the fields to relieve herself. She did not have a toilet in her house.

“This is a first-of-its kind case in UP, where help has been given to a rape victim’s family on the basis of circumstantial evidence,” she said, adding that funds have also been provided to build toilets in the village under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan.
