Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Saturday renamed under-construction ‘Manyavar Kanshiramji Government Medical College’ as ‘Sheikhul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan Medical College.’

Hasan (1851-1920) was the founder of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. The medical college was conceived in 2007 by Mayawati at a cost of Rs 300 crore.

“I had placed my demand before Mulayam Singh and Akhilesh Yadav as they are the epitome of secularism. Hasan was a prominent freedom fighter who had served jail in Malta between 1916-1920. I am happy they have accepted my demand,” said Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Arshad Madani in a joint press conference with CM Akhilesh Yadav at Mulayam’s residence 5-Vikramaditya Marg.

“It is necessary that future generation remember Maulana Mahmood Hasan and his role in the freedom struggle. We will offer all the support to the medical college,” Akhilesh said.

The move is seen as an attempt by Mulayam to soothe the resentment brewing among Muslims in Muzaffarnagar after the recent communal riots. Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani and Mulayam were also present.
