Figteen-year-old Karan Valmiki died after being run over by a speeding truck in Coperganj on Tuesday afternoon. The incident sparked tension in the area with the police resorting to lathicharge the locals.
The truck (UP78 N 3063) ran over Valmiki in the Khalwa area of Coperganj and the boy died on the spot.
Though the truck driver managed to escape,locals set the cement-bag loaded truck on fire. Demanding compensation for Valmikis family,they damaged vehicles and resorted to throwing stones at vehicles passing through the area. As angry locals attacked the police,they resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.
Kanpur DIG Hari Ram Sharma said: The situation is under control and police have been deployed in the area. He added that Rapid Action Force has also been stationed in Coperganj. Traffic SP Ram Lal Verma said that efforts are being made to trace the truck driver. A case of rash driving and unintentional murder has been registered against the driver, he said.
Verma added that a case will also be registered against the locals involved in the violence.
