BJP MP from Mohanlalganj Kaushal Kishore has sought declaring Sant Kabir Das’s birth anniversary a public holiday.
The MP will formally raise the issue during a rally at Jhulelal Park in Lucknow on April 3. BJP national president Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh are scheduled to address the rally where demand for regularisation of contractual employees in various state departments will also be raised, the MP said.
During its tenure, the Akhilesh Yadav government has announced seven public holidays, taking the total number of holidays in a year to 39.
“Sant Kabir Das was a great luminary revered by both Hindus and Muslims. He took a stand against fundamentalism and targeted ‘pongapanthi’ and superstitions. His birth anniversary should be declared a public holiday and celebrated as a national festival,” Kishore told The Indian Express.
The MP said both communities — Hindu and Muslim — are “responsible for the rise in religious fundamentalism”. “I attended RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s meeting yesterday. There was nothing (in Bhagwat’s speech) that could be termed as fundamentalism, he only urged everyone to work for the humanity. Some people may be giving their own statements,” he said.
Kishore claimed the rally will be attended by contractual employees from various state departments. “We want the government to regularise their services,” he said.
