While Governor Ram Naik and Samajwadi Party MLA Ravidas Mehrotra have written to the chief minister demanding a probe into the alleged murder of Shahjahanpur-based journalist Jagendra Singh, SP’s national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav on Friday said state minister Ram Murti Singh Verma — an accused in the case — will not be dropped from the cabinet.
Verma, then local SHO Prakash Rai and other policemen have been named in the murder case of Singh, who died after being allegedly set ablaze, at a Lucknow hospital on Monday.
Ram Gopal Yadav, a Rajya Sabha MP, who was in Lucknow on Friday to attend a party meeting, told media persons that there is no ground for removing Verma from the ministry. “Merely lodging an FIR does not make anyone a culprit. An FIR is no reason for removal from the ministry. It also does not make one guilty. Action will be taken after the inquiry and culprits will be punished,” he said.

Governor Ram Naik, who was in New Delhi on Friday, told The Indian Express: “A representation from journalists from Shahjahanpur have met me and said that it is a case of murder and not suicide. It is a serious issue. I had spoken to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and also wrote a letter to him two days ago about the incident. I had also attached the memorandum from Shahjahanpur-based journalists with my letter for further action.”

SP MLA from Lucknow Central, Ravidas Mehrotra, too has written to Akhilesh, demanding Verma’s removal, while alleging that Singh was set on fire and brutally murdered. He also has mentioned that Singh, in his statement before he died, had named Verma, the SHO and other policemen.
While stating that Verma should be removed from the ministry till he gets a clean chit, Mehrotra has demanded a high-level inquiry as well as the suspension and arrest of the accused policemen.
Meanwhile, Akhilesh has expelled former party MLA Devendra Pal Singh from Shahjahanpur for indulging in alleged anti-party activities and indiscipline. Devendra Pal, a bete noire of Ram Murti Singh Verma, had earlier written to Akhilesh, accusing the minister of tarnishing SP’s image by indulging in anti-farmer policies. He had also alleged that Verma has stopped compensation to farmers whose crops were damaged by untimely rains.
