A strong police force had to be deployed to rescue the two policemen – a sub-inspector (S-I) and a constable.

Two policemen were rescued on Wednesday evening after they were held hostage by villagers in Tahrauli police station area in Jhansi. One of their “captors” was held in connection with the case.

A strong police force had to be deployed to rescue the two policemen – a sub-inspector (S-I) and a constable.

SSP Jhansi Jitendra Kumar Shukla said, “People from Basari village had held the S-I and the constable hostage when they had gone to investigate a case of cow theft. They also had snatched the S-I’s service pistol.”

“The cow theft case was lodged following a complaint on Tuesday accusing a man named Bharat Rajpoot. He had allegedly forcibly taken complainant Babu Lal Kori’s cow to his home. S-I Durga Prasad and constable Kuldeep Kumar reached Bharat’s house in the evening and inquired about the cow tied outside his house. Bharat claimed that he had bought the cow from someone. When the S-I asked him the name of the seller, he refused to answer and instead entered into a heated argument with the policemen,” said Abhay Narayan Rai, Circle Officer (CO) of Tahrauli area.

Then women and men from the village forced the two policemen into a room and locked them inside, he said. Bharat snatched the service pistol of the S-I while allegedly manhandling him, added the CO.

“I got a call later from Bharat saying that he has held the policemen captive as they were misbehaving and that station officer of Tahrauli police station Kamta Prasad too had abused him over the phone. Soon, the district magistrate, City SP and other police officers reached the spot with police force and freed the hostages. The pistol too was recovered,” Rai said.

A case was registered against five accused, including Bharat, under IPC sections 395 (dacoity), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt). Charges of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act was also lodged against the accused as the S-I is a Dalit.
