The Circle Officer (CO) and the SHO of the Jaswant Nagar police station of Etawah district have been suspended and a sub-inspector dismissed from service for torturing an eight-year-old girl on Monday.

The girl was brought to the police station following a complaint of theft of Rs 280.

Taking a serious note of the incident, the Chief Minister Mayawati too intervened in the matter Tuesday evening and asked DGP Vikram Singh to submit a report into the role of the policemen within three days. The CO (Jaswant Nagar) Jalim Singh was suspended following the CM’s order. But while the CM and top police officers were busy in the damage control exercise — a TV channel beamed the torture footage live — the cops in the dock visited the victim’s parents and tried to force them into withdrawing their complaint.

The girl’s parents — Bhoop Singh Valmiki and Rajkali — told The Indian Express that the SHO and the SI came to their house four times between 12 and 4.30 am on Tuesday with a paper and tried to forcibly obtain their signatures. The SHO visited their house on Tuesday afternoon too,Rajkali said.
