Tension broke out in Varanasi Central Jail on Wednesday, where inmates held hostage two of the jail staff including the jail superintendent, and also pelted stones.

Four persons, including jail doctor Dr Suresh, suffered head injuries. The situation was brought under control when police and administration, including the District Magistrate, reached the jail. Inmates demanded to remove jail superintendent Captain SK Pandey.

Inmates were under the impression that the jail superintendent was planning to shift the interview hall (Mulakat Ghar),where inmates meet their visitors. The present location is an open field. “Some one had told inmates that we are planning to shift Mulakat Ghar to a closed hall with an iron grill in the middle. It was false information,I was renovating the hall planning to use it for a different purpose”,said Pandey.

He added that they came to know about the confusion recently, when a few inmates sent letters to him showing unhappiness and urging him not to change the venue. In the jail, inmates can deposit their complaints in a letter box, which is carried to all barracks everyday.

On Wednesday,Pandey called all inmates into the field. “When I went there, the inmates told us that they have come to know about the plans to shift the Mulakat Ghar. We tried to explain to them that there is no such plan, but the inmates refused to listen and closed the entrance gate. They demanded that the District Magistrate should come”,informed Pandey.

When other jail staff rushed to their rescue, inmates pelted stones on them. Dr Suresh and three jail wardens suffered injuries on the head. Later, the District Magistrate, along with other administrative officials and the police force, reached the venue.
