Miles away from Delhi’s Tihar jail,in the remote Mariyahu constituency of Jaunpur, jailed ganglord Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi is facing an electoral challenge from a woman ‘widowed’ by him.

Malti Dubey has therefore a personal score to settle. Munna Bajrangi allegedly was behind the killing of her husband Kailash Dubey in the winter of 1996. A history-sheeter against who 18 criminal cases, including nine of murder, are pending,Bajrangi has been fielded by Apna Dal.

But 50-year-old Malti, who has been nominated by the BJP,doesn’t sound a bit nervous. Doggedly she says: “I’m asking people to help me in my fight against Munna Bajrangi,” and then cautiously adds: “We are taking all care, because our rival is not a politician but a dreaded gangster.” She is particularly focussing on women to come out in her support.

Former head of the Rampur block development committee, she is contesting Assembly election for the second time. She had earlier contested as an Independent from Jaunpur in 1996 and lost by 5,000 votes.

She joined the BJP around a month ago and was earlier associated with the BSP. She,however, left Mayawati’s party after being denied ticket.

The focus of her campaign has been the “sufferings caused by Bajrangi and his gang members to the people of the area”. And it is bearing fruits, according to her campaigners.

“There are many in Jaunpur who have suffered at the hands of Munna Bajrangi. They are helping us. Some can’t do this openly, but are motivating people around them,” said Malti’s brother-in-law Subhash Dubey.

Kailash Dubey, then president of Jaunpur block development committee, and two others — Raj Kumar Singh and Banke Lal Tiwari — were shot dead by a gang in the congested Jamalapur market of Jaunpur on January 24,1996. The police said the

murder took place over a political rivalry.

Two assailants,Alam Singh and his father Gajranj Singh, were named in the FIR while others were unidentified persons. During investigation, the police found involvement of Munna Bajrangi and some others. Munna Bajrangi was arrested and sent to jail. In 2004,Munna Bajrangi got bail and fled.

While on run,Munna Bajrangi was found allegedly involved in the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai who, along with six supporters, was shot dead in Ghazipur’s Bhanwarkol area on November 29,2005. The CBI,which investigated the case, announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for his arrest. Another don Mukhtar Ansari, who is now in Agra jail, was named as the key conspirator.

In 2009,Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested Bajrangi and he was brought to Jaunpur to face trial.

Bajrangi’s lawyer Devendra Singh said that,in the Kailash Dubey murder case,a Jaunpur court has awarded death sentence to Alam Singh and his appeal is pending in the High Court.

“Since Bajrangi had gone missing, the court has separated his file from other accused. His trial in the case has started,” said the lawyer.
