As if its prime minister ministerial candidate’s name was not effective enough in Jat-dominated western UP, BJP is now using the names of former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Mahendra Singh Tikait to attract public for Narendra Modi’s rally in Meerut.
Modi will be addressing a rally of 14 Lok Sabha seats of western UP at Meerut’s Shatabdi Nagar ground on February 2. Even though the area is known as a BJP stronghold, the party’s local units have erected hoardings displaying pictures of Charan Singh and Tikait with a message that Modi will fulfil the dreams of these leaders.
“Both Tikait and Charan Singh were great leaders and farmers, particularly those from Jat community, have great regard for them in this region,” said Chaudhary Ajit Singh, BJP’s Meerut district vice-president.
Tikait’s son Rakesh Tikait said, he has no objection if BJP uses the name of his father to attract crowds for the rally. “Tikaitji was a man for entire society. If BJP promises to follow his ideology and fulfil his dreams about welfare of farmers, I have no objection if they use his name,”said Rakesh, who is also national spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan union, found by his father.
Rakesh, however, has not been invited for the rally.
RLD general secretary and Charan Singh’s grand son, Jayant Chaudhary, was not available for comments. However, RLD state president Munna Singh Chauhan said that Modi was trying to misguide the people of western UP by using the name of Charan Singh.
Meanwhile, Jayant is holding meetings with local people and taking out foot march in western UP to keep Jat votes consolidated for the RLD. His party is also going to hold a rally in Agra on January 30. The rally will be held at Kothi Meena Bazaar ground where Modi had addressed public meeting on November 21.
