IMD warns of heavy rain in more than 20 districts in UP over next 24 hours, sultry weather to follow
Very heavy rain, with lightning and thunderstorms, is expected in Shajahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, and Pilibhit districts on Tuesday, IMD officials said.
The Lucknow centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday morning issued a heavy rain alert for over 20 districts in Uttar Pradesh, especially in parts of the state’s western region, for the next 24 hours. Officials, however, said the heavy rain conditions are likely to subside soon after in most areas, and “uncomfortable sultry weather conditions” are likely to prevail in the coming days.
Very heavy rain with lightning and thunderstorm, with wind speed of up to 30-40 kmph, is expected from Tuesday morning in Shajahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, and Pilibhit districts; while lightning and thunderstorm with heavy to moderate rain is expected in at least 20 districts, including Kanpur, Kannauj, Auraiya, Etawah, Mainpuri, Rampur, Badaun, Unnao, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, etc, officials said.
“For today, UP is expected to witness ‘heavy’ rain along with ‘very heavy’ rain in Western Uttar Pradesh. Mild showers will continue in parts of the state after 24 hours as the influence of the low-pressure area would shift from the North Bay of Bengal towards Central India,” an official with the weather department said.
“The temperature, which has dropped by 4-5 degrees now, will rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius after 24 hours. As there would be existing moisture along with sunlight, uncomfortable sultry weather is expected for two to three days from Wednesday,” the official added.
It has been raining heavily across the state over the last two days. As per the IMD, in the past 24 hours, an average rainfall of 21.9 mm has been reported in Uttar Pradesh, which is 208 per cent more than the normal rainfall of 7.1mm.
Even as parts of the country, especially in the north, are reeling under heavy rain, the IMD said on Sunday that September is likely to see above-normal rain, and warned of landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand as well as Himachal Pradesh.
