The husband of Idrawati, the recently-elected zila panchayat member, was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants near his house at Utraon in Allahabad on Sunday evening. The victim was identified as Sariju Prasad Patel (45). An FIR has been registered in the case.
The police said the possibility of the incident being a result of business dispute or election-related was being looked into.
Supported by the BJP, Idrawati was elected as zila panchayat member in the recently-held elections. Patel was at a shop near his house around 8 p.m. on Sunday, when two people on a motorcycle shot him from a distance.
The shot apparently missed Patel, who tried to flee to his house. The assailants then came near him and fired a couple of rounds at close range. He sustained injuries in the back and stomach and collapsed. He died on the spot, even as the assailants fled.
Angry residents and supporters then blocked the Allahabad-Faizabad road, not allowing the police to take custody of the body. When the Superintendent of Police (Trans-Ganga), Digamber Kushwaha, arrived with the local force to negotiate with them, the crowd resorted to stone pelting.
“It was completely unexpected as the protests had been peaceful till then. The SP had to move towards a safe place in the fields. The situation turned normal after some time,” said Deputy Inspector General (Allahabad Range) Bhagwan Swaroop Srivastava. He too had rushed to the spot with additional forces following information about the crowd giving trouble.
Kushwaha said, “The family members have not named anybody so far. They said it could either be a business dispute, as the victim owned wine shops, or election-related, as his wife was recently elected as Zila Panchayat member. We are trying to talk to the family members and other sources to identify the accused. Further investigations are on.”
