Even as the number of deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor reached 35 Saturday,police said the liquor was sold by suppliers in at least a dozen villages in Mubarakpur area of Azamgarh.

Azamgarh SP Arvind Sen said there is a possibility that the liquor could have been sold from more than one place as the people affected are from about 12 villages.

Police said Ghure Chauhan,a resident of Adampur village and one among the dead,is the only person to have been identified as one of the sellers.

Sen said some people have even cremated the bodies without informing the police and getting an autopsy conducted.

A police officer said the liquor was prepared in Naraun village by those involved in preparing illicit liquor. He added that the liquor was supplied by over a dozen suppliers including Ghure. Police have taken about 10 such suppliers into custody.

Police said some villagers had come to hospital after 48 hours of consuming the liquor. Chief Medical Officer BB Singh said postmortem of 16 persons were conducted.

DM Neena Sharma has appointed a three-member committee consisting of Additional District Magistrate (Administration),SP (City) and Chief Medical Officer to probe into the matter.
