Amid preparations for Rahul Gandhis rally at Phulpur on November 14,a hoarding which urged Rahul Gandhi to take over the party leadership in view of Sonia Gandhis illness and drift in the government, caused much embarrassment to the party on Saturday.
It was put up by Abhay Awasthi, alias Baba Awasthi, who claimed to be a Congressman and a former state president of Kisan Congress. The party distanced itself from his act and,by late afternoon, ensured that the hoarding was removed.
Abhay Awasthi said that he got it removed after he got a call from state party chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who told him that the hoarding was getting controversial.
The hoarding, which was put up at Subhash Chauraha in Civil Lines, read: Maata bimaar.mantrimandal lachaar (Mother is weak.the ministry is helpless),and portrayed Rahul Gandhi as the future protector of India.
Claiming to be doing some straight talk, the hoarding appealed people to reach Jhunsi on November 14 for Rahuls rally and appealed to him to take over leadership.
Baba Awasthi said: My intention was not to make comment on anybody in particular. But the fact is that after Congress president Sonia Gandhi fell ill,the central team of ministers seem to be unable to face the onslaughts that the party is facing from all sides, including saints.
Awasthi, who claimed he was state president of Kisan Congress from 2006 to 2010,added: Some may not like what was stated in the hoarding, but sometimes in politics ‘tough talk is necessary.
Union Minister Sri Prakah Jaiswal, when asked about the hoarding in a press conference, said: This is not an official hoarding and there are many Congress workers, many of whom are not in the forefront. So,who has done it and for what purpose is something yet to be found out.
