For those wondering where Lagaan,Munnabhai heroine’s gone
More surprising than the absence of Gracy Singh from the Hindi film scene, despite having delivered blockbusters like Lagaan and Munnabhai MBBS,is the fact that she is so busy she has barely time to see the films she’s done. Reason being her repertoire getting richer by the day with regional cinema projects.
“Actually,I don’t accept every offer that comes my way,” says Gracy in Lucknow to promote Aseema,a film based on an Oriya novel.
Her ‘not-every-offer’ line makes you cite the atrocious Deshdrohi —and by the way,did she check out the antics of ‘KRK’ on Bigg Boss?
“Some things don’t work out the way they are expected to
and as far as watching TV is concerned, believe me,I don’t have the time,” says the actress who tasted fame first with the TV series Amaanat,in which she played the eponymous role.
She proves her claim of abstinence from TV with her ignorance about the Telangana issue. “I was wondering why they shifted shooting schedule of my Telugu film from Hyderabad to Mumbai!”
Having romanced Aamir Khan,Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor on screen,Gracy has been paired with the biggest of South Indian stars, from Nagarjun to Mammootty and from Mohanbabu to Abbas. Two Punjabi hits too in her kitty: Lakh Pardesi Hoiye and Choodiyan.
She may not be tuned into reality TV,but most of her forthcoming films are based on true stories. “I have just finished The White Land which
revolves around predicament of the populace of the salt desert in the Rann of Kutch. The story of Aseema too,Aparajita Mohanty the author of the novel on which it is based says,is based on a true story.”
She plays a woman deserted by her husband and how she studies to become a lecturer and brings up her daughter denying herself a love life.
“The director aged a little trying to convince me to play the mother of a 22-year-old,” she giggles. A comedy she did called Chanchal fell prey to the 26/11 attack in Mumbai and sank without a trace, but she is content with what she’s doing,no matter how underplayed the exhibition of her Hindi films.
“On December 18,Aseema is being released in 17 theatres across the country, including Lucknow,” informs Ajit Kohli of Galaxy, managing the promotional tour.
“I am happy with the work I am putting in because I am drawing appreciation,” states Gracy.
