Harassed by youth,girl immolates herself

Upset over harassment by a local youth,a 13-year-old girl immolated herself at her house in Naubasta police station area of Kanpur on Wednesday evening. The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the youth,but he is yet to be arrested.

The victim’s father,who is a labourer,alleged that Ravi Yadav,20,of the same locality had been harassing his daughter for the last three months. He used to make calls and send her obscene messages. He also alleged that Ravi had given the girl’s number to his friends too,who also used to harass the girl by making calls and sending messages. Yesterday,she complained to her brother,who went to Ravi’s house and the two had an altercation. Her brother came back,but soon Ravi arrived there along with his mother Meena.

A heated exchange took place between Ravi’s mother and the girl’s mother. Meena and Ravi claimed that it was the girl who used to make calls and send messages,the girl’s father said. The girl denied the allegations,but Ravi and his mother humiliated her in presence of the locals.

Upset over the humiliation,the girl went inside her house and set herself on fire after dousing kerosene. By the time,her family members and the locals broke into the room the girl succumbed to burns,said Kanpur Superintendent of Police (West) Bharat Singh Yadav. He said the police are searching for Ravi.
