Two weeks after the sensational molestation of a girl in the streets of Guwahati became a nationwide issue, the police on Monday arrested Amar Jyoti Kalita, one of the main accused in the case,in Lanka area of Varanasi. Kalita carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

Varanasi SSP B D Paulson said Kalita,a native of Madhavpura locality in Noonamati police station area of Guwahati, was caught during routine checking near Kashi Vishwanath temple. Since there was a huge crowd of pilgrims on the day, there were extra security arrangements. Policemen stopped Kalita for questioning on suspicion. They found his driving licence and contacted the Guwahati counterparts to verify his antecedents.

The Guwahati police informed that the name and other details matched one of the accused wanted in the molestation case. They mailed photographs and video clippings to Varanasi and confirmed Kalita’s identity.

The SSP said Kalita told him that he left Guwahati a day after the incident and had since been travelling. First,he went to Bhubaneswar, then to Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and arrived in Varanasi on Monday only,Paulson said.

A police team from Guwahati is arriving on Tuesday to take Kalita, the SSP said.

Kalita, who was seen in the TV footage as one of the most active in the molestation incident, had disappeared almost immediately, but his face became familiar because he had even given bytes to the TV reporter while the incident was on. Kalita had allegedly refused to let the police take the victim away without the presence of woman constables.

A contractual employee of Assam Electronics Development Corporation,Kalita was a part-time actor, having played roles in a crime serial on a Guwahato TV channel. His pictures picked up from the video footage of the incident shot by a reporter of NewsLive,a satellite news channel in Guwahati, were flashed by the media and police all over.
