With the state having 11 DG-rank officers, the UP government has proposed to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to extend for three months the tenure of DGP Arun Kumar Gupta. The DGP is due to retire on January 31.
With too many claimants for the top post, sources in the government said it will take time to select the next DGP. “It is the top post, thus the government needs time to find the right person for the job,” said a senior officer.
Gupta was appointed as DGP on January 1, just a month before his retirement. After Gupta, a 1977-batch IPS officer, there are 11 DG-rank officers in the state. Among them, three to four are in the list of probables.
Those in the race include Jagmohan Yadav — considered close to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav — Surya Kumar Shukla, Ranjan Dwivedi and V K Gupta.
Earlier, there was speculation about Surya Kumar or Jagmohan Yadav replacing Gupta as both were promoted as DG with on December 31. Besides Surya Kumar and Jagmohan, Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar, Gopal Gupta, R N Singh, Kanahiya Lal Meena and Om Prakash Singh were promoted to the DG-rank that day. Om Prakash Singh is currently on central deputation.
