Amethi,which was renamed as Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar by the previous Mayawati government,will be called Amethi again. The state Cabinet on Monday decided to change the names of eight districts,which were created and named after Dalit personalities by the BSP government.
The Cabinet also decided to restore the original name of King George Medical University in Lucknow,which was named Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University by the Mayawati government.
Kanshiram Nagar,which was carved out of old Etah district,has been renamed Kashganj. Similarly,Mahamaya Nagar,Jyotibaphulenagar,Ramabai Nagar districts will be now known as Hathras,Amroha and Kanpur Dehat,respectively. The names of Prabudhanagar,Bheemnagar and Panchasheelnagar,which the Mayawati government had created in West UP,have been changed to Shamli,Sambhal and Hapur,respectively.
In a statement,the government said locals and people’s representatives from these districts had demanded the names to be changed. The people could not connect to the new names and it had led to a loss of identity,the statement added.
Regarding the decision to restore the name of King George Medical University,the government said the original name had international recognition in the field of medical education and research,which the new name lacked.
