Govt orders FIRs against 2 ex-ministers,officials

The government had ordered an inquiry by the Vigilance Establishment on the basis of Lokayukta N K Mehrotra’s report submitted to the government in May.

The UP government Wednesday ordered lodging of FIRs against former ministers Babu Singh Kushwaha,Naseemuddin Siddiqui and 19 engineers of Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (RNN) for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities in purchase and supply of sandstones for the construction of various memorials and parks in previous Mayawati government.

The government had ordered an inquiry by the Vigilance Establishment on the basis of Lokayukta N K Mehrotra’s report submitted to the government in May.

Vigilance Establishment conducted an inquiry following a government order. Cases will be registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and under section 409 of the IPC (criminal breach of trust by public servant).

In his report,the Lokayukta claimed Rs 1,410 crore was siphoned off by politicians and government officials in the purchase and supply of pink sandstones.

Besides lodging criminal cases against the indicted ministers and officials,the Lokayukta had recommended that Rs 1,410 crore should be recovered from them as per the legal process.

Lokayukta had found that the works for the construction of memorials and parks were given in utter violation of the RNN rules and financial handbook. In his report,he said the sandstone was purchased at exorbitant rates without any market survey or competitive bidding.

Lokayukta also found that the sandstone quarry leaseholders with links to politicians and officials were asked to form consortia and they were arbitrarily chosen for supplying the sandstone.
