The work of greening Kanshiram Green Eco Garden, which was built by the Mayawati government and has trees and animals made of bronze, began today with the Forest Department and Lucknow Development Authority jointly planting 20 real trees at a token plantation programme.

In the current financial year,4,000 plants of various species will be planted in the garden which has around 500 life-sized bronze structures of trees and animals acquired at a cost of Rs 36 crore. The garden is spread over 73 hectares near VIP Road and was built at a cost of Rs 1,075 crore.

In a statement,Chief Forest Conservator Sukhjinder Singh said that the plantation will increase the beauty of the garden, improve the climate of the area and reduce the ill-effects of heat generated from the stones extensively used in the garden.

The Forest Department has prepared a work plan for plantation of 4,000 plants inside the garden on the proposal of the management and maintenance committee of parks and memorials made by the Mayawati government. The department had done a survey of the garden in June and identified places along the boundary walls inside the garden for plantation of trees.

The department selected certain types of trees that will give a green look to the garden and provide shade to visitors. Presently there is no greenery nor shade in the garden. There is only a central mound with grass cover and two northern and southern lawns with plantation of cycas. The rest of the area has only stone structures that generate heat in the summers.

The garden was constructed on the land vacated after demolition of the old jail building near the Kanshiram Smarak Sthal.
