Give tickets to Mahila Cong: workers,UP head tells Sonia

The state president of the Mahila Congress on Thursday raised the issue of members of the party’s women wing not getting any tickets so far.

The state president of the Mahila Congress on Thursday raised the issue of members of the party’s women wing not getting any tickets so far.

Meera Singh, who was in town after touring nearly 70 constituencies, said in a press conference here that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been informed about the matter.

“I took a delegation of 20 women to meet her. I asked her that why is it that not a single member or office-bearer of the Mahila Congress has not been given any ticket so far. Mrs Gandhi listened to our grievances and assured that the matter would be looked into,” said Meera.

Meera said she didn’t know the people who had been sidelining women from her unit. “Had I known,I would have reached their residence and protested,” she said.

The women’s wing chief said she was not against women being given tickets. “But it should be given only when the women in question are truly bigger in stature. What is the point in giving tickets to women whom nobody knows? In such a situation, the party should choose women from its mahila unit,” said Meera.

She said this was very much within the right of the women’s wing to think that a few of them deserved a ticket.

In nearly 135 seats that have been announced so far,the Congress has given tickets to women candidates in only half-a-dozen cases. However,Meera insisted that only her party was serious about women’s reservation.
