Violence broke out in UP’s Sitapur district on Monday after the body of a teenaged girl, who was prevented from committing suicide by a village chowkidar earlier in the day, was found hanging inside a police station.
As the irate mob stormed into Mehmoodabad police station while pelting stones — they damaged several vehicles and torched a jeep — the policemen opened fire in which one of the protesters was killed.
At least four policemen, including Sitapur SP Rakesh Krishna suffered injuries in the violence.
The 19-year-old girl, identified as a resident of Mehmoodabad town, was found hanging with a scarf from the toilet’s ventilator inside the police station, SHO Rajveer Singh said.
He added the girl had been brought to the police station in the morning allegedly after she tried to kill herself by jumping into a canal. She was caught by a village chowkidar, who handed her over to a police team patrolling the area.
Singh said the girl had left her house on Sunday night following a fight with her elder brother. Around 4 am, she hitched a ride on one Amar Singh’s motorcycle, the SHO said. The man dropped her near Sharda canal and left.
Singh claimed that a village chowkidar caught the girl as she was trying to jump into the canal and took her to the policemen patrolling in the area. She was brought to the police station on a tempo, he added.
Circle Officer of Mehmoodabad area, Vijay Bahadur Singh, said at the police station, the girl sought permission to use the toilet. As she did not return for a long time, the policemen knocked at the door and after getting no response, broke into the toilet only to find her body hanging with a scarf from the ventilator, he added.
The CO claimed the girl had given two addresses to the policemen and both were found to be false. Some locals identified her, following which, her family members were informed.
While the police sent the body for postmortem, the girl’s family and locals gathered at the police station and started demanding that the body be brought back there.
Her family also alleged foul play on the part of the police, alleging that the girl was sexually assaulted.
The mob soon turned violent and indulged in brick-batting and arson, the CO said.
Inspector General (Lucknow Zone) Zaki Ahmed said the police had to open fire to control the unruly mob in which 27-year-old Nadeem died.
According to Deputy SP Vijay Bahadur Singh, four policemen, including SP Krishna, were injured in the clash.
The Sitapur police, late in the evening, said the postmortem report has confirmed death by hanging.
They added that there were no signs of any sexual assault on the girl’s body.
