Faizabad police on Friday found the body of an 18-year-old girl,with both her hands tied with a rope,in a canal under Rudauli police circle. On Sunday,the police stepped up efforts to ascertain the identity of the victim after receiving the autopsy report which said the girl was strangulated to death after being raped.
Additional SP Piyush R Srivastava said the post-mortem report did not mention any injury marks on the body.
The Rudauli police have sent details of the body,along with her photos,to nearby police stations and also police of adjoining districts,including Barabanki and Sultanpur,to trace her family. They are also taking opinions from senior officials on releasing a poster of the girl to facilitate her identification.
Inspector of Rudauli police station Janardhan Dubey said they suspect the girl belongs to a middle class family. The police have now registered a case against unidentified persons on charges of murder and rape.
On Friday,locals informed Rudauli police station about the body of a girl spotted in a canal. Some distance from the spot,the police recovered a pair of sandal suspected to be of the girl.
The police mentioned the recovery of the girls body in a general diary and sent the body for post-mortem.
