A Dalit woman, who was allegedly gangraped on October 31 but whose case was registered on December 10 after the SHRC intervention,is on an indefinite fast and staging a dharna near the collectorate in UPs Sahajhanpur district demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
Police are yet to arrest any of the two accused named in the FIR lodged by the 28-year-old victim, who is also mother of four children.
I am not aware of any such incident or any rape victim staging a sit-in. I will have to inquire in this regard, Syed Wasim Ahmed,SP,Shahjahanpur said when The Indian Express sought his reaction on the womans fast that began December 21.
The victims husband, meanwhile, alleged that accused are from affluent families and so police are avoiding arresting them. The police,he said, are pressuring the family to withdraw the case and go for compromise with the accused.
Since the very beginning, police have avoided any action against both accused - Dharamveer and Indal. They lodged the case on December 10 on directions of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) even though my wife was gangraped on October 31. Four days back, they took my wife for medical examination. V K Patel, the station officer (SO) of Paror police station where the case is lodged, does not want to take any action against the accused, who are now threatening us with dire consequences if charges are not withdrawn, the victims husband,a farmer, alleged.
He said his family members and neighbours take care of his four children as his wife continues with her fast at the collectorate, which is 80 kms away from his village.
Contacted,SO of Paror police station,V K Patel, refused to comment on the allegations levelled against him. He,however, claimed that the Police were collecting call details of the cellphones of both the accused to confirm about their presence in the village the day incident took place.
If they are found guilty, action would be taken against them. We are also verifying if there was some dispute pending between the victims family and the accused, he said, adding that one of the accused is a close relative of the victim.
According to victims husband,on October 31,his wife was returning home when Dharmveer and Indal, who belong to the same village, allegedly overpowered and raped her at gunpoint.
She informed her husband about the incident who took her to Parora police station.
The police, however, refused to lodge the complaint. Later, they staged protest and sent applications to several authorities including SHRC. On direction of the commission, the police registered the FIR on December 10.
