Four cops booked after Dalit man dies in custody

The Saharanpur police Sunday registered an FIR against four policemen,including a SO and a sub-inspector,after a Dalit man taken into custody for questioning in a murder case,died last night.

Fifty-eight-year-old Laxman Singh,a former pradhan of Nandpura village,was declared dead by doctors at a district hospital soon after he was rushed there from Rampur Maniharan police station where he was being held under custody for

interrogation.

Four policemen —- station officer of Rampur Maniharan police station VP Singh,sub-inspector SC Tyagi and constables Dharmendra and Gurahal —- have been booked on charges of murder and under SC/ST Act. They have been put under suspension,but not arrested.

Saharanpur SSP DK Chaudhary said they are waiting for postmortem report to reach at a conclusion over the cause of death.

He said that Laxman Singh was brought to the police station on Saturday afternoon for questioning in the murder case of his nephew Lalit Singh whose body was found on May 17.

The police suspect Lalit was killed over a land dispute. During interrogation,Singh’s condition deteriorated,following which the policemen rushed him to district hospital. Meanwhile,the villagers too gathered at the hospital.

Doctors declared Laxman Singh dead a few minutes after his arrival.

Angry villagers and family members of the deceased staged a protest and alleged that Laxman Singh died following severe beating by the police during questioning. They blocked a road and demanded action against errant policemen.

Later,senior police officials reached the spot and assured the protesters of action against guilty officials. On Sunday morning,on a complaint filed by Laxman Singh’s son Manish,an FIR of murder was lodged against the erring police officers.
