For Ambedkar Memorial,LDA now digs up road to build gates

When it comes to Ambedkar Memorial, the Lucknow Development Authority keeps throwing up surprises.

When it comes to Ambedkar Memorial, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) keeps throwing up surprises. This time it has dug up the two-lane road on the Gomti embankment, connecting Gandhi Setu with the new police outpost,to construct a pedestal and erect three gates near Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Sthal.

While LDA Vice-Chairman Mukesh Kumar Mesram was not available,LDA Joint Director,Land and Development,S B Mishra, who is heading these projects, refused to comment on this development.

The 30-metre wide road has been dug at three places for the proposed gates, which will be made with chunar stones. Barely 100 metres away,in the middle of the road,a hole of 2.5 metre radius has been dug.

“A foundation to construct a high pedestal is being prepared. Big statues of Lord Buddha with four faces will be erected there,” said an engineer. Along with this,a boundary wall of Mirzapuri stone is being made all along the embankment. As yet,no estimates have been chalked out. According to sources, around Rs 1.25 crore has been spent on the construction of the police outpost itself, which has five rooms with an open hall and a dome on the four pillars in the middle of the building.

According to the engineer, one half of the road, right from Gandhi Sethu to the police outpost, will be removed and converted into a green area.

The main entrance of the outpost is made of glass and the floor is of granite. The road on which the police outpost stands was one of the three near the memorial which were shut down by the LDA a few months ago.

The Gomti Nagar Janka-lyan Mahasamiti had challenged the government’s move in the Allahabad High Court, where the matter is sub judice.

With the construction of the police outpost, the LDA has changed the land use of the 900 sq metre area, blocking the road completely. It has also changed the land use of the 950-metre embankment behind the police outpost to convert it into a lush green area. Earlier, the LDA authorities had said that a picnic spot would be developed there.
