Chief Minister Mayawati has welcomed the high court direction to the CBI into the multi-crore scam which had surfaced during the previous Samajwadi Party regime. Huge quantities of foodgrains meant for distribution through public distribution system to people under BPL category and other welfare schemes were sold in black market and also smuggled to Nepal and Bangladesh.
Mayawati alleged that the Centre protected the previous SP regime and despite repeated request by the UP government for a CBI probe into the scam,it ignored our recommendation. The Mayawati government had first recommended a CBI probe in December 2007. Exposure of white-collar criminals is in the national interest. The swindling through foodgrains meant for the poor and the downtrodden is the most hated crime and the officers involved in the crime should not be spared, she said.
